Aubrey Plaza has spoken out about the ‘nightmare’ of filming a movie with real-life bedroom scenes.
Plaza, widely recognized for her deadpan comedic style and memorable roles in series like Parks and Recreation and The White Lotus, once opened up about a particularly uncomfortable moment early in her acting career.
During an interview with The New York Times, Plaza reflected on her first on-screen s** scene in the 2013 comedy The To-Do List—an experience she bluntly described as ‘a nightmare.’
Plaza played the lead role of Brandy, a studious high school graduate who compiles a list of s**ual experiences she wants to try before college.
One of the more controversial moments in the film involves her character engaging in an explicit m**turbation scene, which Plaza confirmed was not simulated.
She revealed that what she envisioned was far from the reality on set.
“I was like, ‘this is the weirdest acting job I’ve ever had in my life,’” she recalled.
Plaza initially believed the scene would be subtly implied rather than shown explicitly.
Speaking to Conan O’Brien, she shared her expectations: “In my head, I envisioned a nice scene where you just see my hand leave the frame and let the audience imagine the rest.”
However, things played out quite differently when she arrived on set. The camera setup was unexpected and intrusive.
“The camera was mounted on the ceiling, I was in my underwear and a Clinton t-shirt, and there were a bunch of old men smoking—the crew guys,” she described.
Despite her hesitation, she went through with the scene: “And then I went and touched myself. I thought I was doing one thing, and when I showed up, it was a whole different thing, it was a full body shot.”
Uncertain of how to proceed, she turned to the film’s director, Maggie Carey, for guidance.
Plaza recalled asking: “What should I do?” to which Carey simply responded, “M**turbate, like it says in the script.”
Looking back, Plaza admitted that it was ‘a little bit the most nerve-racking’ scene she had ever filmed.
Yet despite the discomfort, director Maggie Carey praised Plaza’s performance, calling her ‘so brave.’
In an interview with Screen Slam, Carey said, “She had no problem putting herself in these very awkward situations. But, you know, it’s played for comedy and she just nailed it… She’s very, err, gutsy.”
The scene has since earned notoriety and even landed The To-Do List on Letterboxd’s list of films featuring ‘real-life’ s** scenes, cementing it as one of the more unconventional moments in Plaza’s career.
