Avatar: Fire And Ash Accused Of Being ‘Racist’ As People Urged To Boycott Movie

As the latest film in the Avatar franchise is set to be released later this year, people are being urged to boycott over ‘racism’ claims.

Avatar: Fire And Ash is set to be released later this year on December 19, as director James Cameron brings the storyline back for yet another adventure.

It’s been 16 years since the first Avatar hit the big screen and revolutionised 3D cinema as we know it.

And as some fans eagerly await the sequel, there’s a lot to be excited about.

However, there’s one issue that has been raised again and again where the franchise is concerned, that being whether or not it features ‘racist’ themes.

Some viewers have perceived the plot to be a metaphor for the way humans, particularly in the west, treats the earth today, and that the film champions indigenous cultures.

But a number of critics noted the similarities of the Na’vi story and the historical oppression of Native Americans, and accused it of cultural appropriation.

Some have criticised the franchise for promoting a white saviour narrative, while others are not happy with casting non-indigenous actors as the Na’vi.

One viewers claimed: “Hey y’all, Avatar is terrible.

“Racist, cliché, half a plot yet still full of holes and dangling threads, and entirely too long.”

As another said: “Avatar 2 was f****** trash.

“It was super racist. Super cringy. Way too long. It’s full of stereotypical bulls**.”

A third noted: “I am flabbergasted at the overwhelmingly white cast for Avatar 2.

“It’s not unexpected but it’s just so tone-deaf and racist that I can’t NOT be appalled like Kate Winslet, what the f*** are you doing over there?”

But Cameron has since opened up about the claims, when The Way of Water’s was released in 2022.

Speaking to UNILAD, he said: “I think the important thing is to listen and to be sensitive to issues that people have.

“The people who have been victimised historically are always right.

“It’s not up to me, speaking from a perspective of white privilege, if you will, to tell them that they’re wrong.”

He added: “I have to listen. I have to say, ‘Okay, if that’s what you’re feeling, that’s what you’re feeling.’ And it has validity.

“It’s pointless for me to say, ‘Well, that was never my intention.’”

The director explained: “I hope they [viewers] see the intention, which is to celebrate the wisdom keepers.

“I see the indigenous people that still remain in our world today as the people who are more connected to nature than we are in our industrialised urbanised civilization, and we need to learn from them.

“If we offend anybody…I can only apologise, but we’re doing the best we can.”
