John Cena has explained why he didn’t tell his fiancée about the Amy Schumer bedroom scene where he was ‘inside her.‘
When actors sign on for romantic comedies, intimate scenes often come with the territory.
But for WWE superstar John Cena, filming a particularly graphic bedroom sequence with comedian Schumer became memorable for all the wrong reasons, especially when it came to breaking the news to his then-partner.
The scene in question has become infamous in Hollywood lore, partly due to Schumer’s eye-popping claim during promotional interviews that Cena was ‘actually inside her’ during filming.
Cena revealed during an appearance on Conan that landing the role of Steven, Schumer’s fitness-obsessed boyfriend in the film, caught him completely off guard.
“Honestly I didn’t think I’d get the part,” he explained, noting that this unexpected development created a communication problem with his partner at the time, fellow WWE legend Nikki Bella.
The wrestling star admitted he had been procrastinating on having a crucial conversation with Bella about the nature of the role.
“I kept putting it off not telling Nicole and not having the discussion of, ‘Hey there may be some graphic scenes,’” Cena confessed.
In Trainwreck, directed by Judd Apatow and written by Schumer herself, the comedian plays a commitment-phobic magazine writer who cycles through various relationships before finding her match in a sports doctor played by Bill Hader.
Cena’s character, Steven, represents one of those pre-true-love relationships, and their bedroom scene pulls no punches in its awkward comedy.
Schumer has been refreshingly candid about filming the sequence, joking on an Australian chat show that she ‘couldn’t keep a straight face because he was actually inside me.’
Co-star Bill Hader added fuel to the fire by quipping: “Wrestlers, they’re not faking. When they’re wrestlers they don’t fake!”
The comedian also described Cena’s physique in characteristically blunt terms: “It’s a whole universe, that butt… it’s not even human. It felt like having a refrigerator on top of me.”
She joked that while she could ‘just lay there’ during filming, the scene was ‘probably harder for him’ as he ‘had to, like, do something.’
Once Cena actually secured the role, he knew he couldn’t postpone the conversation any longer.
The way he finally broke the news to Bella, however, left much to be desired. “So I got it and I couldn’t say no, so I kind of walked in one day and was like, ‘Hey, I’m kind of just doing this,’” he recalled. “And that was the wrong approach.”
According to Cena, Bella’s reaction was immediate and intense.
“She has such beautiful brown eyes, and they glowed with red hellfire,” he said, painting a vivid picture of her displeasure.
“She has such a great smile, but she turned into like the alien and the predator at once.”
Bella herself later addressed the situation publicly, revealing the lasting impact the scene had on her, per Yahoo.
“Imagine watching your man do a s** scene and have the whole world see his big butt,” she said. “You know, you get visuals. I swear, I couldn’t m**turbate [in like] forever because I just think of the s** scene.”
Despite the personal complications, Cena has maintained that the experience taught him valuable lessons about vulnerability on screen.
Speaking on The Howard Stern Show, per SPORTbible, he revealed he wore a ‘modesty sock’ during filming and joked about the growing audience.
“That scene started with a camera operator, focus puller, and a boom guy…by the end of the scene, they had catering set up in there, everybody was in there.”
