The stars of the newest ‘tug on your heartstrings’ film sit down to share an insight into their characters.
The new romantic fantasy stars Barbie‘s Margot Robbie, The Banshees of Inisherin‘s Collin Farrell, Calahan Skogman, Brandon Perea, Shelby Simmons, and Chloe East.
The heartwarming film follows Sarah (Robbie) and David (Farrell), single strangers who meet at a mutual friend’s wedding and soon, through a surprising twist of fate, find themselves on A Big Bold Beautiful Journey.
The official synopsis reads: “A funny, fantastical, sweeping adventure together where they get to re-live important moments from their respective pasts, illuminating how they got to where they are in the present… and possibly getting a chance to alter their futures.”
Critics are raving about the fantasy movie. Showbiz Junkies‘ Rebecca Murray reviewed: “The film beautifully weaves together themes of confronting fears, atoning for past mistakes, and finding forgiveness, while sending the characters on a journey whose final stop doesn’t matter.”
Carla Hay wrote for Culture Mix: “Sweet-natured, artfully filmed, and utterly predictable, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey puts a slightly pretentious and fantastical spin on a romantic drama about two jaded people revisiting past experiences in order to emotionally heal in the present.”
IGV Presents sat down with Robbie and Farrell to discuss their characters.
When asked what they enjoyed most about their characters, Farrell revealed: “I kind of found his sense of apathy interesting. Apathy isn’t usually interesting, but in regard to the stage of his life that he was at, and how he felt kind of an emptiness inside.
“He has enough in his life to live a decent life. He’s got a few friends. He’s got two parents that love him. He’s got a decent livelihood. But there was some kind of inability to connect with anything around him.
“Um, and I found that quite sad and quite moving. But it was a very gentle character, very tender character.”
Robbie spoke of her character’s personality in the film: “I think she does have her defenses up a bit, but I don’t know. She does the whole ‘I don’t care and I’m single and I like it.’
“But at the same time, she asks him to marry her after like two minutes of talking, and she means it too. She was like, ‘I would marry you if you said yes right now.’ Like, I don’t know. I can relate to her in some way.”
A Big Bold Beautiful Journey is out on 18 September in Australia, and on 19 September in the U.K. and the U.S.
