A star from My 600-Ib Life has sadly died aged 40.
The reality TV show follows the journey of Americans who are struggling with extreme weight gain, and has made household names of several stars.
There have been some success stories, while others sadly still struggle with their weight despite the intervention of the show.
They use a combination of diet and calorie control along with gastric bypass surgery to try and reduce their weight, but it hasn’t worked for everybody.
My 600-Ib Life has been running for 13 series, with the most recent airing in January 2025, and stars surgeon Younan Nowzaradan (often referred to as ‘Dr. Now’), therapist Lola Clay, and psychologist Matthew Paradise.
18 patients have sadly died since starring on the show.
The latest tragic death is Latonya Pottain, a woman from Northern Louisiana who has died at just 40 years old. She passed away on May 17.
Pottain explained how she turned to food as emotional support after her mother died when she was young and her father left, leaving her living with her older sister until she was 15.
She said her reason for joining the show was so she could walk down the aisle to marry her future husband, Daune.
Sadly, the reality TV star‘s brother died shortly before filming, which impacted her progress.

Pottain created a GoFundMe page earlier this year and gave a sad update that she had been bedridden since June 2024.
Her weight had also increased to 740 pounds.
She wrote on the page: “I worked extremely hard to get it down. My journey with weight struggles has been a long and difficult one. In 2022, I was featured on My 600-lb Life, where I started at 531 pounds and worked hard to get down to 505 pounds. However, after the show aired, I experienced overwhelming backlash, which sent me into a deep depression. My mental health suffered, and I became fearful of undergoing weight loss surgery.”
Pottain explained that in 2023, she ended up in an abusive relationship, and her father had also received a cancer diagnosis.

“Unable to take the emotional and physical toll, I returned home to Louisiana. Unfortunately, my health continued to decline, and I developed severe sciatica nerve pain, which caused extreme stomach cramps,” she explained.
“I was prescribed fentanyl, but my body rejected the medication, leading me to begin therapy. Now, I am completely bedridden and unable to get to the hospital because EMTs say transporting me would be a fire hazard due to my weight.”
Unfortunately, she did not receive the help she needed and passed away earlier this month, making her the 18th person to have appeared on the show to have died since it aired.
A preliminary finding by the coroner reports that Pottain’s death is likely due to congestive heart failure, and her manner of death was listed as natural. A final autopsy is pending, reports NBC.
