A Netflix drama has left fans feeling nostalgic as it soars into the charts.
If you’re looking for something new to get hooked into on Netflix – you’re in the right place.
A real-life drama has landed on the streaming platform, and it’s had viewers feeling very nostalgic about a particular era between the late 2000s and early 2010s.
The drama has rocketed up the Netflix charts since it was put on the platform just days ago, but the film was actually released in 2023.
It’s earned an impressive 97% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as receiving glowing reviews from fans, so it definitely has potential to be on your ‘to-watch’ list.
The film follows the story of BlackBerry – one of the first mobile phones that surged in popularity between 2007 and 2011 – known for its iconic tiny keyboard.
In particular, it documents the meteoric rise, but also dramatic downfall, of the smartphone.
The BlackBerry was the first of its kind – a smartphone with text messaging.
But after failing to keep up with the evolving demands of consumers, and, of course, the birth of Apple and the iPhone in all its glory, it became an impossible market.
The film drew inspiration from the book Losing the Signal: The Untold Story Behind the Extraordinary Rise and Spectacular Fall of BlackBerry, which was written by Jacquie McNish and Sean Silcoff.
The story begins in 1997, where viewers witness BlackBerry co-creators Douglas Fregin (Matt Johnson) and Mike Lazaridis (Jay Baruchel), alongside Glenn Howerton, portraying ruthless investor Jim Balsillie.
The synopsis reads: “The true story of the meteoric rise and catastrophic demise of the world’s first smartphone, BlackBerry, is a whirlwind ride through a ruthlessly competitive Silicon Valley at breakneck speeds.”

And it seems to be going down well with viewers.
Taking to X to share their thoughts, one fan said: “Watching BlackBerry on Netflix gave me goosebumps as I did have some of the greatest QWERTY models, from Bold to Passport, with unique BBM to text love..”
Another said: “Rewatched BlackBerry (on Netflix, check it out if you missed it at the time) and Glenn Howerton’s performance is just as incredible as I remembered.
“Like putting a bull shark in a living room fishtank.
“Unbelievable menace and energy boiling off him at every moment.”
Other have been feeling very nostalgic about the era.
One noted: “BlackBerry on Netflix makes me sad how great a phone like that was – and was part of a childhood that allowed us to still feel normal before it all got hectic with smartphones. Great film!”
Since the downfall of their smartphone, BlackBerry have evolved into something very different.
The company now operates as a cybersecurity software and services business.
They no longer manufacture or sell physical phones.
Instead, they focus on providing security solutions for various sectors, including enterprise and government.
