Netflix Users Warned They Could Be Fined $1,300 For Watching New Show

Netflix users have been issued a warning after it’s been reported that viewers could receive a $1,300 fine for watching a particular show.

The Netflix subscription fee has long been an all-inclusive membership package to watch as many or as little shows on the platform as you want.

Unlike other services such as Amazon Prime, where even with a membership, additional fees are sometimes required to watch a particular film or TV show.

And while Netflix is still an all-inclusive subscription service, viewers have been warned of a fine that they could land, as a result of watching one specific show.

In recent years, live events have taken to Netflix as their way of broadcasting, including boxing fights, WWE wrestling, NFL, and much more.

And with several live fights being aired on the platform tonight (October 3), there’s one thing viewers should know.

In the UK, citizens are required to have a TV licence to watch most things.

According to the website, it covers viewers for watching all TV channels, like BBC, ITV, Channel 4, U&Dave and international channels.

As well as paid TV services, like Sky, Virgin Media and EE TV, live TV on streaming services, like YouTube, Netflix, and Amazon Prime Video, and everything on BBC iPlayer.

Now, if you’re just planning to watch shows on Netflix that aren’t live, a TV licence isn’t required.

But given that the WWE will host numerous fights on the streaming service tonight, which will be broadcast live, a TV licence is required to watch them.

The TV licensing website adds: “If you are watching a TV programme that is being broadcast live on Netflix, you need to be covered by a TV Licence.

“You don’t need a TV Licence to watch on demand programmes on Netflix.”

And if you fail to do this, you could be slapped with an almighty fine.

$1,300 dollars (£966) to be exact.

Netflix’s own website states: “Live events are included on all Netflix plans, allowing you to watch what everyone is talking about the moment it happens!

“Enjoy sports, comedy stand-ups, award shows, and other special events that stream live on Netflix.

“Live events allow you to rewind, pause, play from the beginning, or jump to live at any point during the livestream and can also be watched or downloaded afterward.”

But without knowing about the TV licence loophole if you’re watching from the UK, you could be caught without knowing.

Daniel McAfee, Head of Legal Operations at Lawhive, stated: “Under U.K. law, any live television broadcast requires a valid TV Licence, regardless of the streaming platform.”

He emphasized the importance of staying informed: “Viewers should stay updated on licensing changes as streaming platforms expand live broadcast offerings.”
