Rachel Zegler, the star of Disney’s ill-fated Snow White remake, has opened up in a raw and emotional interview that has left fans heartbroken.
After enduring years of intense backlash, the actress has broken her silence on the personal toll it took on her mental health, revealing just how deeply she was affected by the controversy surrounding the film.
In a candid conversation with i-D magazine, published on June 23, Zegler admitted that she struggled to cope with the public scrutiny and vitriol that followed her casting in the live-action Snow White reboot.
“My f**king psychiatrist has seen me through all of it,” she confessed.
Her therapist, she said, was a lifeline during one of the darkest chapters of her young career, constantly reminding her: “What you’re going through isn’t normal.”
That statement, Zegler said, ‘did such wonders for me in multiple situations in my life.’
The situation became so overwhelming that she turned to medication for help.
“I just wasn’t functioning,” she admitted, explaining her decision to start taking anxiety medication.
Calling it ‘a game changer,’ she added: “I wanted to function in a way that made me feel confident in the way I was moving through the world.”
Despite being cast in 2022 as one of Disney’s most iconic princesses, Zegler’s journey has been anything but a fairytale.
From racist trolling and criticism of her remarks about the 1937 Snow White film—where she claimed Prince Charming ‘literally stalks’ Snow White – to outrage over a now-deleted anti-Trump post, the actress became a lightning rod for controversy.
Even co-star Gal Gadot reportedly clashed with Zegler over political differences relating to the Israel-Palestine conflict.
And when the film finally premiered in March 2025, it bombed at the box office despite early promotional optimism. Critics panned it, and the audience backlash was fierce.
Still, Zegler insists she refuses to wallow in negativity.
“I think a victim mindset is a choice, and I don’t choose it,” she said defiantly. “I also don’t choose nastiness in the face of it. I don’t choose negativity in the face of it.”
“I choose positivity and light and happiness,” she continued. “And I do believe at times, happiness is absolutely a choice.”
While she remains in the public eye with her current role as Eva Perón in London’s West End revival of Evita, even that performance has stirred controversy.
Her decision to sing the show’s most iconic number from a balcony, forcing paying audience members inside the theater to watch via livestream, sparked fresh criticism.
