The actress has defended her real-life oral s** scene, which shocked cinema audiences in 2001.
When it comes to raunchy scenes in a movie, a lot of the finer details are often left to the imagination.
We might commonly see motions, gestures, as well as a lot of kissing, but it’s rare that viewers are exposed to the raw nature of the act in its entirety.
But that’s where this 2001 erotic romance film is completely different.
The two actors involved in the out-there scene were completely naked and exposed, with no props or prosthetics to fall back on.
Some have described it as the most intimate s** scene that exists.
And it wasn’t just the act in full view that captured viewers.
Kerry Fox, lead actress in the film, was also required to play-out a completely real oral s** act on her co-star, Mark Rylance.
But it seems the reality of the situation had a huge impact on Fox’s personal life, namely her relationship.
Alexander Linklater was her boyfriend at the time, and has previously spoken openly about the challenges the two faced during this period.
Intimacy was directed by late filmmaker, Patrice Chéreau.
The story follows a chapter in the life of a man who finds himself living apart from his family.
Jay (Rylance) begins a detached rendezvous with a woman, Claire (Fox), which becomes complicated by emotional attachment, but is ultimately shattered by reality.
Speaking to the Guardian about his girlfriend performing oral s** on another man, for the purposes of creating art, Linklater noted: “Frankly, neither I nor (despite her experience) Kerry had any idea what it would be like, or what effect it would have on us.
“Ahead lay an obscure destination of the heart. Would it be better, or worse? If it didn’t ruin us, would it make us stronger?”
But it seems to have made the couple stronger, as they are married almost 25 years on from the film’s release.
Fox was asked in 2012 whether she regretted filming the X-rated scene, but she instead came to its defence.
Speaking to the Metro, she said: “I absolutely have no regrets and it’s one of the best pieces of work I’ve ever done.”
The couple also have two children together, and have not let the scene get the better of their bond.
Rylance doesn’t have the same appreciation for the scene.
Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, he noted the ‘understandable stress’ it had on his marriage.
He said: “I felt Patrice put undue pressure on me on set to do that.
“And at that point I didn’t have the confidence as a film actor to say no.”
But Linklater emphasised the importance of having realistic s** scenes in movies.
He described the movements between his then-girlfriend, and her co-star, as ‘gentle and humane.’
