Will Ferrell has shared the one famous role he’ll never return to after he reportedly fell out with his co-star.
Throughout his career, the 58-year-old has played a number of iconic characters, from Ron Burgundy in Anchorman to Brennan Huff in Step Brothers.
But arguably, his most famous role came when he played Buddy the Elf in one of the most popular Christmas films of all time, Elf.
Will Ferrell became a leading comedy actor
Ferrell, who is known for his comedic portrayals, had an interesting start to his career, first joining famed improv group The Groundlings, which is where he is said to have developed many of the eccentric characters we know today.
However, it was in 1995 when his career really took off after he joined the cast of Saturday Night Live, becoming one of the show’s biggest stars over his seven season tenure, most notably for his impressions of George W. Bush and characters like cheerleader Craig Buchanan and Alex Trebek in his Celebrity Jeopardy sketches.
After leaving SNL in 2002, he went on to star in Old School, before starring in a string of hit comedy movies, most of which are still hugely popular more than two decades later. Ferrell soon became known as one of Hollywood’s leading comedy actors.
With everything he starred in seemingly to turn to gold, it’s no wonder movie producers would want to capitalise on this success, meaning the actor would be offered huge sums of money to create sequels in a bid to replicate precious successes.
It’s something we regularly see in the entertainment industry, however Ferrell has revealed just how much money he was once offered to reprise one of his most popular roles and the reason he has always turned it down.
The one role Will Ferrell would never bring back
For many years, viewers have questioned whether the A-lister would ever reprise his role in Elf, which follows Buddy, a human who was accidentally raised by Santa’s elves in the North Pole.
The iconic 2003 hit sees Buddy traveling to New York City in search of his biological father, after discovering he doesn’t quite fit among the other elves. On his way, Buddy attempts to spread Christmas cheer, which ultimately leads to complete and utter chaos along the way.
Elf very quickly became an absolute classic with fans, and while many people have been eager to find out what Buddy gets up to next, the sad truth is we’ll never know.
Ferrell has previously revealed he was offered an astounding $29 million to star in a sequel, but he has remained steadfast in his decision that it’s never going to happen.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ferrell explained: “I would have had to promote the movie from an honest place, which would’ve been, like, ‘Oh no, it’s not good. I just couldn’t turn down that much money.’
“And I thought, ‘Can I actually say those words? I don’t think I can, so I guess I can’t do the movie.’”
Speaking in another interview on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, he also joked: “I just think it would look slightly pathetic if I tried to squeeze back in the elf tights: Buddy the middle-aged elf.”
Before the death of Ferrell’s Elf co-star James Caan, it was actually revealed why a sequel to the beloved Christmas film never came to fruition.
The real reason Elf 2 never happened
Accoridng to Caan, who passed away at the tender age of 82 in 2022, many of the cast members were keen on the idea of Elf 2, including Zooey Deschanel and Mary Steenburgen.
However, it was reportedly down to behind-the-scenes tensions that put a stop to any proceedings of a sequel.
The late actor admitted on the radio show The Fan in Cleveland (via The Independent) that he had been excited by the prospect of revisiting the story.
He said: “We were gonna do it, and I thought ‘Oh my God, I finally have a franchise movie. I can make some money, let my kids do what the hell they want to do.’”
Yet in the same interview, Caan also claimed that Ferrell and the film’s director, Jon Favreau, ‘didn’t get along very well.’
The actor explained: “Will wanted to do it, and he didn’t want the director, and [Favreau] had it in his contract. It was one of those things.”
It’s disappointing, but as Ferrell said, it could never top the original.
