Souza was the charasmatic host of Canal Livre, a crime series in Brazil, and was the most popular show in the city of Manaus.
The host’s charming on-screen persona even saw him get elected on three separate occasions to political office.
Canal Livre documented violence incidents, police raids, and crime scenes, often with the presenter and crew arriving before the authorities.
Things to a dark turn in 2009 when investigators began looking at the possibility of Souza orchestrating crimes to boost his viewership.
They believed that Souza had either set up or facilitated the violence on screens.
Authorities theorized that the TV star was responsible for at least five murders between 2007 and 2009.
The suspicions gained attraction, and the crime show was taken off the air. Souza was stripped of his political immunity, followed by an arrest.
The TV host maintained his innocence.
The Netflix crime documentary explores the story through archived footage, investigative reports, and interviews with colleagues, law enforcement, family members, and others involved.
