Keira Knightley has opened up about the difficult reality of starring in Pirates of the Caribbean, revealing that the experience ultimately led her to years of therapy.
The English actress became a global star after playing Elizabeth Swann, the governor’s daughter who evolves into a fearless pirate leader, alongside Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow and Orlando Bloom’s Will Turner.
Knightley appeared in three films in the hugely successful franchise between 2003 and 2007; a period she has since admitted was both career-defining and emotionally overwhelming.
Now, she has spoken in greater detail about the darker side of the films’ success.
The future of Pirates of the Caribbean
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed in 2024 that another Pirates of the Caribbean movie is currently in development.
Speaking to ComicBook.com, he said: “With Top Gun, you have an actor who is iconic and brilliant [Tom Cruise]. But we’re gonna reboot Pirates, so that is easier to put together because you don’t have to wait for certain actors.”
Johnny Depp is not expected to return to the franchise following the highly publicized defamation trial involving his ex-wife Amber Heard.
During the trial, Heard’s lawyer asked Depp: “If Disney came to you with $300m dollars and a million alpacas, nothing on this Earth would get you to go back and work with Disney on a Pirates of the Caribbean film?”
The actor replied: “That is true.”
Knightley has also confirmed that she has no plans to return to the series.
Speaking to People, she said: “It was amazing and I’m very pleased to have been a part of that, but I suspect that my swashbuckling days are done.”
The actress appears to have shifted toward projects that better suit her personal and professional priorities after previously discussing the difficulties that came with starring in such a major blockbuster franchise.
Keira Knightley’s life and career now
After stepping back from Hollywood for a period following Pirates of the Caribbean and several other high-profile films, Knightley has since embraced a quieter and more balanced lifestyle.
She currently lives in London with her husband, musician James Righton, and their two children, while continuing to take on projects that align more closely with her interests.
Most recently, she appeared in the 2025 thriller The Woman in Cabin 10 as well as the 2023 crime drama Boston Strangler and Netflix spy thriller series Black Doves in 2025.
Reflecting on her Pirates years in an interview with The Times, Knightley admitted the experience left her conflicted because of the intense public scrutiny that accompanied the films’ success.
She explained: “It’s a funny thing when you have something that was making and breaking you at the same time.”
The actress said she was left feeling “in a very confused place” while navigating the pressures of working on such a massive franchise.
“They were the most successful films I’ll ever be a part of, and they were the reason that I was taken down publicly. So, they’re in a very confused place in my head,” she said.
Knightley also revealed that the demanding filming schedules convinced her never to join another franchise of that scale again.
“The hours are insane,” she said, explaining that productions of that size took over years of her life and left her with very little personal freedom.
Years of therapy after global fame
Knightley has previously spoken candidly about how difficult fame became during her early twenties.
In a 2019 interview with The Telegraph, she revealed she underwent “many years of therapy” to help manage the pressures that came with worldwide recognition.
“The fame that came with them I just couldn’t handle,” she admitted.
Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar in 2023, Knightley also reflected on the experience of playing Elizabeth Swann, saying she struggled with how the character was perceived.
“It was interesting coming from being really tomboyish to getting projected as quite the opposite. I felt very constrained. I felt very stuck,” she explained.
Keira Knightley’s shocking confession
Knightley has now admitted she believes many people still view her as a poor actress because of the Pirates of the Caribbean films.
During a 2025 Vanity Fair interview alongside Rosamund Pike, where the pair reflected on Pride & Prejudice, Knightley said: “Pirates of the Caribbean had already come out, but I think in the public consciousness, I was seen as a terrible actress.
“I had this phenomenally big success with Pirates and I think Pride & Prejudice was the first one that was a phenomenally big success, but was also critically acclaimed.”
She continued: “I remember it coming out maybe the same year, maybe around the same time, as Pirates 2 – and I got the worst reviews ever for that. Then also being nominated for an Oscar at the same time, it was, in my 21-year-old head, quite confusing.”
The second Pirates movie, Dead Man’s Chest, was released in July 2006, only a few months after Knightley received her first Best Actress Oscar nomination for playing Elizabeth Bennet in Pride & Prejudice.
Despite the difficulties she has spoken about over the years, Knightley has insisted she has no regrets about taking on the role that made her famous.
She said: “Would I do anything different? No, I wouldn’t because I’m unbelievably lucky now, and my career is in a place where I really enjoy it.”
