Authorities have issued an update on Hayden Panettiere’s death as more devastating details have emerged.
The actress, best known for roles in Nashville and Heroes, died on Sunday 17 August at the age of 36.
Her family, friends and fans have been paying tribute to the star since her tragic death was announced.
Hayden’s father Skip said in a statement: “It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden.
“She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her – and to the millions who watched her onscreen.
“We ask for privacy as our family takes time to process this unimaginable loss.”
Her The Architect co-star Viola Davis wrote on Instagram: “What an amazing talent you were… so gifted.
“I wish the world had more time with you because I had a burning curiosity about who you were becoming. I saw this beautiful Phoenix rising from the ashes.
“Your tests became your testimony, and your testimony became your legacy. You will be remembered. Rest well, Hayden,” Viola added.
Hayden Panettiere’s Struggles Behind The Fame
Despite becoming a Hollywood star at a young age, Hayden Panettiere’s life away from the cameras was marked by a series of deeply difficult experiences.
After giving birth to her daughter Kaya in 2014, Panettiere struggled with severe postpartum depression.
She has described feeling emotionally numb after the birth and later turned to alcohol as she battled to cope.
Her addiction became increasingly serious, eventually affecting both her career and personal life.
Panettiere entered treatment while filming Nashville, but her struggles continued for several years.
In 2018, she made the heartbreaking decision to give full custody of Kaya to the child’s father, Wladimir Klitschko.
Panettiere has since stressed that she did not simply walk away from her daughter, but believed the decision was necessary while she focused on recovering.
Her relationship with Klitschko also ended, while she later endured an abusive relationship with Brian Hickerson.
Panettiere has spoken publicly about the impact of domestic abuse and the difficult process of rebuilding her life.
Another devastating blow came in 2023 when her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere, died at just 28. His death added another layer of grief during an already difficult period.
In May 2026, Panettiere released her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning.
The book offered her most personal account of addiction, postpartum depression, motherhood, family relationships, trauma and loss.
Rather than allowing years of headlines to define her, Panettiere used the memoir to tell her story in her own words.
It revealed the enormous challenges behind the fame while showing her determination to confront her past and move forward.
Hayden’s Tragic Passing
For those who watched her as Claire Bennet in Heroes, Juliette Barnes in Nashville or Kirby Reed in the Scream franchise, the news marks the sudden loss of a star who had been part of their lives for decades.
Panettiere would have turned 37 on August 21, meaning her death came just days before her birthday.
The actress leaves behind her daughter, Kaya, as well as her parents and countless fans who followed her career from childhood.
The circumstances surrounding her death remain under investigation.
The Greenville Police Department is working alongside the Greenville County Coroner’s Office to establish what happened.
Authorities have stressed that the preliminary investigation has found no signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances.
Her cause and manner of death have not yet been released.
Panettiere was found unresponsive at a property in Greenville, South Carolina, on Sunday, August 16. Police and emergency medical personnel were called to the scene at around 1:50pm after an acquaintance placed a 911 call.
Despite medical assistance being provided, Panettiere was pronounced dead at the scene.
A statement from the Greenville Police Department said: “[Officers] accompanied by EMS personnel, responded to a report of an unresponsive female at around 1:50 p.m. Sunday.
“Upon arrival, medical assistance was administered; however, the individual, later identified as Hayden Panettiere, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
“The case is under investigation by the Greenville Police Department in conjunction with the Greenville County Coroner’s Office. The preliminary investigation has not indicated any signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances. An acquaintance of Ms. Panettiere placed the 911 call.”
A representative for Hayden, Kasey Kitchen, also confirmed officials are looking into what happened.
Kitchen told NBC: “There’s an investigation ongoing. We should know more tomorrow.”
