Fans have been left horrified by a ‘disturbing’ incest scene in Blake Lively’s latest movie.
Despite it quickly climbing the ranks on Amazon Prime Video after its May 1 release, the sequel to the 2018 comedy-thriller has stirred considerable controversy.
While fans eagerly anticipated the return of Lively and Anna Kendrick as Emily Nelson and Stephanie Smothers, respectively, one particular storyline has sparked outrage and discomfort among audiences.
In this new installment, directed by Paul Feig, the characters travel to Capri for Emily’s lavish wedding celebration.
However, what should have been a glamorous affair takes a dark turn, as a series of deaths and suspicions of foul play overshadow the nuptials.
The film, while maintaining its comedic roots, ventures into unsettling territory, most notably with a plot point involving incest between Emily and her twin.
Blake Lively portrays not only Emily but also her sisters, Faith and Charity, triplets with complicated dynamics.
One scene, in particular, where one of Lively’s characters makes advances on her twin, has left viewers deeply disturbed.
Although the original film also hinted at incestuous themes, most notably in a recurring joke involving Stephanie and her half-brother, fans argue that this sequel crossed a serious line.
On X, user Sparkles shared their shock, writing: “GUYSSSS I AM HORRIFIED. I decided to watchm and why is Blake Lively’s character’s twin making s**ual advances to her HEEELPP.”
A Reddit thread echoed this discomfort.
User Coopyoli admitted: “I liked it cause of Anna Kendrick, I thought she was super funny in this one. The incestuous scene grossed me out, though.”
Another viewer, Lovesgnomes, added: “The assault scene with the sister sat very wrong with me… and to have Stephanie immediately make an off-color joke about it absolutely destroyed any pretense of a friendship between her and Emily.”
One commenter, Calchal, pointedly stated: “Playing off incest/rape/molestation as a joke is certainly a choice.”
The backlash even touched on the tonal inconsistency of the film. While intended as a dark comedy, many argued the subject matter was far too disturbing to be treated lightly.
Reddit user Sicko-Mode observed: “It was quite messed up and they just immediately joked it off.”
At the film’s SXSW premiere earlier this year, Blake Lively hinted at the controversial direction.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, she recalled how director Paul Feig surprised her with a ‘curveball’ plot twist.
“It definitely upped the ante,” she said. “It was very uncomfortable to watch in this theater with you guys.”
The film reunites a cast including Henry Golding, Andrew Rannells, Allison Janney, and Elizabeth Perkins.
According to the official synopsis, Stephanie and Emily reconnect on the picturesque island of Capri for the latter’s opulent wedding—an event quickly marred by murder and betrayal.
Although Another Simple Favor delivers on suspense and star power, many viewers believe the attempt to shock went too far this time.
