People are hailing a ‘brutal’ new war film based on true events as an all-time ‘masterpiece.’
War films have always been one of those genres people keep coming back to. There’s just something about them – the scale, the emotion, the sense of realism – that makes them easy to get pulled into, whether you’re a longtime fan or just watching out of curiosity.
Over the years, we’ve seen plenty of them come and go, but every so often one lands that really gets people talking. And when that happens, you can usually tell pretty quickly.
Word of mouth starts building, social media fills up with reactions, and suddenly it feels like everyone is having the same conversation about one particular film.
That seems to be happening again right now. Viewers who’ve already seen this latest release are sharing some seriously big opinions, with many hinting that it might be something special – the kind of film that sticks with you long after it’s over.
‘Everyone needs to see it’
Viewers have been left deeply affected by the film, with many describing an intense emotional response that lingers long after the credits roll.
Some have admitted it left a real ‘pit in their stomach,’ while others say they were moved to tears by its raw and unflinching approach.
Interestingly, this enthusiasm isn’t fully matched by critics. The film holds a 71 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes – enough for a ‘certified fresh’ label, but not exactly overwhelming praise.
Audiences, however, tell a different story, with a hugely impressive 95 percent Popcornmeter score showing just how strongly it’s resonating.
One person said: “I think it should have been nominated for the Academy Award and won! The best movie of 2025.”
Another added in agreement: “Everyone needs to see it!”
“I cried when I watched it,” shared a third.
While somebody else said: “One of the best films I’ve seen in years!”
Another commented: “A haunting and powerful film.”
A dark chapter of history brought to screen
The film focuses on another major war from history and specific happenings around it. It is billed as both a historical drama and a psychological thriller.
Written, co-produced, and directed by James Vanderbilt, the film had its world premiere in the Gala Presentations section of the Toronto International Film Festival on September 7, 2025.
Nuremberg stars Russell Crowe as Hermann Göring, who became the second most powerful person in Germany during the Second World War, behind Hitler, in the Nazi Party.
Rami Malek stars as Douglas Kelley, a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army Military Intelligence Corps. Kelley served as the chief psychiatrist at Nuremberg prison during the first month of the Nuremberg Trials.

What happened at the Nuremberg trials?
The Nuremberg Trials were international criminal trials held by France, the Soviet Union, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
The remaining leaders of the Nazi Party were put on trial for their roles in the invasions of several European countries and the atrocities committed by Germany in World War II, the most horrific of which would be the holocaust, in which six million Jews were murdered in concentration camps.
Nuremberg the film is based on the book ‘The Nazi and the Psychiatrist,’ by Jack El-Hai, and follows US Army psychiatrist Kelley as he carries out an assignment to investigate the personalities and monitor the mental status of Göring and other high-ranking Nazis in preparation for and during the trials.
Richard E.Grant, Michael Shannon, Leo Woodall, John Slattery and Lydia Peckham all have supporting roles in the picture, which saw Matt Zoller Seitz of RogerEbert.com say in his three star (out of four) review: “It’s a solid film of [a] kind that used to be more common: an earnest, unpretentious Oscar Movie that wants to be seen by everyone, and consequently doesn’t try to be too complex or arty.
“It wants to educate and inspire as well as entertain, and isn’t shy about that ambition.”

Barry Levitt, from Empire Magazine, said of Vanderbilt’s film: “Well-paced, expertly performed, and an urgent call to stand up to fascism, Nuremberg is a powerful, sweeping story of the attempt to bring an unthinkable evil to justice.”
In total, the the International Military Tribunal tried 22 of the most influential remaining Nazi leaders between 20 November 1945 and 1 October 1946.
Twelve of the defendants, including Göring were sentenced to death. Ten of them were hanged on October 16, 1946. Göring took his own life the day before.
