Controversial Movie That Was Stopped By Government Still Has 100% Rotten Tomatoes

A controversial movie that was stopped by the government still has an incredible 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Few films have endured a journey as chaotic, mythologized, and ultimately triumphant as this.

Originally shut down by the Polish government in 1977 when it was nearly complete, the film was abandoned and presumed lost.

Yet decades later, it has re-emerged as an unpolished gem of science fiction cinema, now boasting a perfect 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Based on The Lunar Trilogy by Żuławski’s great-uncle, Jerzy Żuławski, the film tells the story of astronauts who crash-land on a distant planet and inadvertently establish a new civilization.

Years later, a scientist named Marek is sent to the planet and is hailed as a messiah, triggering a violent clash between human colonists and the planet’s native species, the Sherns.

At its heart, the BFI describes the film as a ‘philosophical exploration of the true nature of mankind,’ examining how power, myth, and ideology can spiral into fanaticism.

The film’s turbulent production history is as gripping as its narrative. After beginning in 1976, the Polish government shut down production in 1977, claiming it was over budget.

In reality, the move was politically motivated. According to a 2021 documentary, Escape to the Silver Globe, government officials sought to control Poland’s film industry and used Żuławski as a scapegoat.

“Wilhelmi wanted to show he was in charge… and had the power to humiliate Żuławski,” the documentary claims.

Despite orders to destroy all materials, much of the footage was secretly saved. Żuławski later returned in the mid-1980s to complete the film using the surviving footage, adding narration and footage from the streets of 1980s Warsaw to fill in missing scenes.

The result is a patchwork masterpiece.

Though long unavailable, On the Silver Globe has now found new life in restored editions.

Its intense handheld cinematography, haunting score by Andrzej Korzyński, and frequent breaking of the fourth wall contribute to a disorienting yet unforgettable viewing experience.

Today, it remains a cult classic, not just for its surreal imagery or grand themes, but as a testament to artistic defiance.

Żuławski’s work may have been interrupted, but it was never silenced – and its 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating proves it.
