The gunman made an eerie request in the note revealing a potential motive.
A New York police officer is among four people killed in a shooting, which took place yesterday evening (July 28) inside a skyscraper at 345 Park Avenue, Manhattan.
The gunman has been identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura, who died from what has been described as a ‘self-inflicted’ gunshot wound.
NYPD commissioner Jessica Tisch says the suspect could be seen parking a BMW outside the building, while openly carrying an M4 rifle.
Immediately after entering the building’s lobby at 6:30p.m. local time , Tamura opened fire on the NYPD officer who tragically lost his life.
He then shot at a woman who took cover behind a pillar, before he began ‘spraying’ the lobby with gunfire.
Among those who were harmed in the attack, four were killed, one was seriously injured, and a further four people sustained minor injuries.
The three other victims are yet to be identified by police.
Officer Didarul Islam, who lost his life, was married and expecting his third child with his wife.
During a press conference last night, City mayor Eric Adams explained that Tamura had a licence to own guns in Nevada, but also had ‘documented mental health history.’
He added that the gunman struggled with the neurodegenerative disease, chronic traumatic encephalopathy.
The disease is a progressive brain condition, which can occur due to repeated head injuries, and causes symptoms such as memory loss, confusion, mood swings, and behavioral changes.
While the motive behind the shooting is still under investigation, Tamura was reportedly carrying a note with him that made several alarming claims.
In the note, he revealed that the NFL, a business located in the building, was partly to blame for his struggle with brain disease.

He noted that the impact of playing football was connected with his mental illness.
He also asked in the note that his brain be studied after his death.
The NYPD paid tribute to Officer Islam, saying he represented ‘the very best of our department.’
In a statement, the force said: “He was protecting New Yorkers from danger when his life was tragically cut short today.
“We join in prayer during this time of incomprehensible pain.
“We will forever honor his legacy.”
Prior to the shooting, Tamura travelled from Las Vegas where he resided, to the east coast, stopping in Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa and New Jersey.
Police searched his car following the shooting, which he double-parked in front of the building, and found a revolver with multiple rounds of ammunition loaded.
City Mayor Adams added: “We lost four souls to another senseless act of gun violence, including a member of the New York City Police Department.
“We’re still unravelling what took place, and our hearts are heavy.”
