Netflix viewers have been left speechless after watching a new ‘gut-wrenching’ true crime documentary with ‘insane twists.’
It’s often rare for true crime lovers to be stunned by a case, but Netflix’s newest feature has shaken fans to the core.
The retelling of the heinous crime has sparked an outpour across social media. One viewer writes: “Absolutely mind-blowing. Not nearly what I expected, it turned out to be something completely different.”
“I was SICK to my stomach watching this,” a second adds.
A third states: “The plot twist was actually insane.”
Critics are also praising Netflix’s latest true crime.
Karina Adelgaard for Heaven of Horror reviewed: “You will want to watch this Netflix documentary for the same reasons you should watch Abducted in Plain Sight or a docuseries like Tiger King. Yes, this new true crime documentary is that wild.”
Rachel Wagner said on her YouTube channel, Rachel’s Reviews: “My mouth was agape at the ending. Truly shocking.”
Leisure Byte‘s Archi Sengupta wrote: “This is a baffling documentary that will leave you hooked from start to end.”
The jaw-dropping new show, by award-winning documentary director Skye Borgman, tells the alarming tale of an online ‘Catfish’ who harassed students.

An online catfish creates a fake identity, often using stolen photographs, names, and details from other people’s lives.
The documentary follows high school student Lauryn and her boyfriend Owen, who were 13 at the time, started receiving suspicious texts from an unknown number in October 2020.
The messages started to include vile s**ual comments along with threats to Lauryn’s life for being in a relationship with Owen.
Both students were left traumatized by the relentless messaging and harassment. Following a short break, the texts went on for 15 months.

An investigation led by Isabella County Sheriff Mike Main began looking into people in the victims’ lives who may want to hurt them in some way.
The twist towards the end of the 90-minute feature has left many in disbelief. The show includes first-hand retellings from the victims, their families, suspects throughout the investigation, and the perpetrator.
Director Borgman sat down with Netflix’s Tudum to discuss the important message behind the true crime documentary: “This [case] is a crazy circumstance, but kids are getting terrible text messages every single day, and they’re dealing with cyberbullying every single day.
“The FBI might not be getting involved, but they’re dealing with it.”

Borgman also noted the maturity of the teenagers at the centre of Unknown Number: The High School Catfish: “Each and every one of them in the film was so mature about it and so willing to help and willing to try to find out what was happening.
“Despite not being believed, despite having fingers pointed at them. So it’s a bigger message, I think, that all these kids wanted to put out there, and hopefully it’s what the documentary does.”
