A furious mom pulled her children out of a movie theater after seeing intimate scenes in the new Wicked film.
Wicked: For Good, the sequel to 2024’s Wicked, has been a major hit since its release on Friday, November 21, breaking box office records set by the first movie.
By the end of its opening weekend, the global total had reached $226 million, well above the original film’s $164.2 million debut.
The biggest shift came in domestic earnings: while last year’s film earned more than double its US takings overseas – $114 million to $50.2 million – this final installment reversed that trend, pulling in $76 million from international markets.
Even so, the US total of $150 million from 4,115 North American theaters sets a new record for Broadway adaptations, previously held by the first Wicked.
It also lands as the second-biggest US opening of the year, behind A Minecraft Movie ($162 million) and ahead of Lilo & Stitch ($146 million).
Globally, it marks the biggest international opening ever for a stage musical adaptation, topping last year’s Wicked.
Awards buzz is already growing around stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, who could set another record next year if they secure Oscar nominations in the same roles for two consecutive years.
Box office success follows turbulent promo tour
Grande contracted Covid late in the world tour promoting the film, forcing her to cut her appearances short.
At the Singapore red carpet premiere earlier this month, an Australian vlogger jumped a barrier and grabbed her.
Erivo intervened immediately, and the man was later arrested and sentenced to nine days in jail.
He has since been permanently banned from entering Singapore.
Mom outraged by romantic scenes and spell-casting
Despite the strong box office start, the new Wicked film has faced criticism.
One angry mom said she took her kids to see the movie but ended up leaving due to scenes involving intimacy and spell-casting.
On Instagram, Sara Burnett wrote: “My honest review on the movie Wicked: For Good… I am shook with how they handled the movie.
“Now hear me out – we LOVE theatre and musicals. We love appreciating the talents and God given gifts that people have. Seeing the acting, the arts and all the creativity.
“But gosh I am not sitting in a movie that is casting legit spells over me and my family and allowing my children to watch scenes where men are s**ually taking off women’s clothing and music that is talking about them laying in bed together.
“I have a feeling that the spells cast in this movie weren’t just some made up words… they had purpose in them! The Bible tells us to stay far away from that and my children even looked at me with big eyes and felt uncomfortable in certain parts of the movie.
“The mom gut knew it was time to walk out.”

She continued: “Now if you’ve watched the movie and loved it, that’s fine! This is our personal conviction and we feel strongly about things our girls watch and the spirits we allow in us.
“I have a feeling this won’t be the last time that our girls have to walk away from a situation that isn’t from the Lord.”
Mixed reactions from commenters
Sara’s post drew mixed reactions.
One commenter wrote: “You went to see a movie called Wicked… a movie about witches… and were shocked there were spells? Bless your heart.”
Another added: “It’s your own fault… the plot and content of Wicked is widely available and everyone knew this was coming in part two.
“You had every opportunity to do your research on whether the content aligned with your values before allowing your kids to even see part one. Ridiculous.”
But some were supportive.
One person said: “I’m a mom who never took my daughter to see it. Proud of you for standing up and leaving.”
Another added: “Totally respect this! We went, but my radar was on alert and some things really bugged me. Wasn’t a big fan.
“I love theater and the arts, and Wicked on Broadway is my favorite of all time, but there were multiple things in these movies that rubbed me the wrong way.”

Wicked books are much more adult-themed than films
The Wicked books are far more adult-themed than the movies. Gregory Maguire’s novels explore sex, politics, religion, violence, and moral ambiguity in a way that pushes them firmly into mature fantasy rather than family-friendly fairy tale.
The tone is darker, the world is more brutal, and characters grapple with identity, prejudice, and power in ways that involve messy relationships and occasional sexual encounters.
The book includes brief s** scenes, references to pr***itution, abusive family dynamics, and psychological trauma.
By comparison, the two new Wicked movies strip out much of that material to align with the PG-13 tone of the stage musical.
Romantic moments are softened and the political and philosophical elements are streamlined into more accessible themes about friendship, destiny, and justice.
