Gordon Ramsay’s new Netflix series has triggered the mums of the internet.
The multi-Michelin star chef is no stranger to controversy and dividing opinion. And it would appear his latest series, Being Gordon Ramsay, is set to continue this trend.
The series has been labeled as ‘obscene’, with viewers raging: “wtf is wrong with humans?” in the comments sections online.
What is Being Gordon Ramsay about?
The new six-part documentary series follows the 59-year-old chef and TV personality as he opens five new restaurants on the top floors of 22 Bishopsgate in London, all at once.
Ramsay describes the premise of the show as his most ambitious project ever, explaining that it is ‘high risk, high reward’ and ‘if it fails…I’m f***ed.’
Throughout the show, as the Michelin Star hoarder faces significant issues with everything from retractable roofs to the size of rum babas to what type of pancakes his 18-month-old, Jessie James, enjoys for breakfast.
Ramsay vents at the American style pancakes at the breakfast table, insisting they should be the more European crepe. His wife, Tana, understandably gives him short shrift and essentially tells him to can it.
So far, the docuseries has received mixed reviews, sitting at a ‘rotten’ 56% on Rotten Tomatoes.
“Being Gordon Ramsay is an easy watch, but it has little to say about food, little to say about the restaurant business, and little to say about the man himself” writes Nick Hilton in the Independent, while Maddy Mussen of the London Evening Standard writes of the series: “Instead of any kind of satisfaction, you ‘re left with the slightly uneasy sense that you’ve just watched six hours of a man who’s spread himself too thin.”
Where has the controversy stemmed from?
Rather than from critics, the main vitriol directed at ‘Being Gordon Ramsay’ has come from Mumsnet.
But it is not so much the content of the show itself or anything to do with Ramsay personally that has drawn the ire of mums online.
Instead, it is to do with one of the dishes that will be served in one of the five new restaurants.
On February 27, Mumsnet user paloma7 went on a tirade, which began: “Ffs! I’m just watching this Netflix show about Gordon Ramsay and his opening of a new restaurant with amazing views in the city. I’m not interested in him particularly, but thought I might go to this ‘Lucky Cat’ just for the views over London, if and whenever it opens.
“BUT – then there is a scene where he is consulting with his head chef about the menu.”
This is where things take a turn with this particular user, who is sickened by one of the more extravagant dishes that will be prepared table-side for diners.
“There is a whole dead baby suckling pig on a plate. They are talking about making this a restaurant feature, requiring two chefs who carve it at your table.
“AIBU to think this is obscene? Yes, I’m vegetarian, but I think even most meat eaters would balk at this? If I were in his restaurant and that was going at the the next table, I would leave. Wtf is wrong with humans?”

“Am I being unreasonable?”
The ‘AIBU’ poll shows that 81% of Mumsnet users who engaged with the post believe the original poster is being unreasonable.
While the OP also adds that ‘not to mention that this will not exactly appeal to his muslim customers,’ other users were less inclined to be outraged about the dish.
“Would you leave if someone was eating a pork chop or a bacon sandwich? It’s the same thing really,” one user replies, “I think if you can’t bear the sight of the whole dead animal you should stick to restaurants and cooking programmes that focus on vegetarian or vegan food.”
Another commenter added: “His is not a normal restaurant? That’s kind of the point? Also plenty of us have been to a hog roast.”
“Most meat eaters I know wouldn’t balk at a suckling pig on the table” another user commented: “Most carnivores are aware of where their meat comes from. I think you’re upset because you’re a vegetarian. That’s ok, each other own. Just avert your eyes if you’re offended.”
Another user referenced traditional meals served in Spain where suckling pig is used, saying: “I certainly wouldn’t be upset seeing it. We go somewhere in Spain where we specifically order a whole suckling pig so it would be a bit hypocritical of me to be turning my nose up that I saw one on tv. I eat meat. I know it’s a dead animal.”
While the author of the post continues in the comments about how ‘We are not living in the court of Henry 8th ffs’ it appears not much support is shown to their viewpoint.
Many users reference hog roasts which have become the norm at festivals and major gatherings for years, as well as traditional meals prepared across Europe.
What may have earned the documentary a higher rating on Rotten Tomatoes could have been a scene where Ramsay himself responds to this criticism, however. Food for thought.
