The world’s most famous actor, whom you’ve likely never heard of, reportedly made 74 movies in a single year.
If you were to guess the name of the busiest actor, you’d probably think of workaholics Ben Kingsley, Brad Pitt, Adam Sandler or Jennifer Aniston, for that matter.
But you’d be wrong. The actor who holds this staggering record is someone whose name you might barely recognize, even if his face is everywhere.
In a candid interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he once claimed: “I actually used to be one of the biggest stars in Russia, bigger than Arnie [Schwarzenegger], bigger than Sly [Stallone].”
At first glance, it sounds like exaggeration. But dig even slightly beneath the surface, and the claim begins to feel… plausible.
You might recognise him from his roles in The Dark Knight (2008) or The Expendables (2010).
That recognition is usually fleeting, a moment of ‘wait, I know that guy’ before the movie barrels on. He is rarely the lead, often the supporting presence who adds weight, menace, or gravitas, even if he’s only on screen for a handful of minutes.
A career defined by momentum
As the brother of A-list actress Julia Roberts, he is considered one of the most prolific living actors in history, boasting over 800 film and television credits.
Nicknamed ‘The Hardest-Working Man in Hollywood,’ he has achieved a record-breaking volume of work, including appearing in 74 films in 2017 alone.
To put that into perspective, many working actors would be thrilled to land two or three roles in a single year. Roberts did that before lunch.
A Facebook post has garnered a huge number of reactions, claiming this man officially holds the record for the most screen credits of any living Hollywood actor – about 800, with 94 more on the way.
“In 2024, he’s clocked 38 projects, which for most actors would be a career phase.”
The comment section tells its own story: part disbelief, part admiration, part confusion.
To this, one person commented, “Now we need a movie… about his life!”
“And yet, nobody under age 45 knows who he is,” reacted another.

Everywhere and nowhere
Since 1978, the actor has amassed an incredible volume of screen credits, including 455 films, 191 television credits and counting, as we speak.
He has appeared in studio blockbusters, straight-to-DVD thrillers, indie passion projects, and films so obscure they barely exist online. Some are released quietly. Others never quite find an audience. But Roberts keeps showing up, project after project, year after year.
However, despite his high-volume work, he is mostly recognized for roles in King of the Gypsies (1978), Star 80 (1983), and Runaway Train (1984), according to IMDb.
These weren’t throwaway performances. They were intense, critically praised roles that placed Roberts firmly in the conversation as one of Hollywood’s most promising actors in the early 1980s.
Few are aware that he received acclaim at the Sundance Film Festival for his role in A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints (2006) and It’s My Party (1996).
He won Best Actor at the New York Independent Film Festival for his role in La Cucaracha (1998), which won Best Film at the Austin Film Festival.
In other words, the talent was never in question.

The shift
Interestingly, a commenter on Reddit revealed the star once spoke about the reason behind his shift from being an Oscar-nominated actor to starring in B-movies.
At the peak of his studio career, he earned $1 million per big-budget film, spending three months on each. But those films were infrequent and hard to secure.
When he was offered $500,000 for just two weeks on a B-movie, he realised he could make several of those annually and earn even more.
Reportedly, with a pregnant girlfriend and a drug habit at the time, the faster, more lucrative option made sense, gradually turning him into Hollywood’s biggest B-movie star.
While others chased awards and headlines, this man chased momentum, working constantly, rarely turning down a role, and building a filmography unlike anything else in Hollywood.
Still chasing the record
However, the Guinness World Record for the most screen credits for a living actor goes to Indian star Brahmanandam, who currently has more than 1,170 titles to his name.
Still, with Roberts’ relentless schedule, he is closing that gap one movie at a time.
And in an industry where relevance is often measured by silence between jobs, Eric Roberts has done something quietly radical: he never stopped working.
