A Netflix murder mystery is enthralling viewers with its insane twists.
The streaming behemoth dropped the new blockbuster to widespread acclaim, with both critics and film fans alike heaping praise upon it. Some have even gone so far as to label it the ‘best movie ever’.
While Netflix may have failed in its bid to procure Warner Bros Discovery, it is still winning its vast worldwide audience over with more and more of its own studio’s films and TV shows.
One of which has hit an incredible 92 percent on the tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes and 94 percent on the popcornmeter. A masterful balancing act of pleasing both film critics and the wider audience.
Fans clamoured for the movie to receive Oscar nominations, although it eventually fell short of such accolades, despite being so highly revered.
The film was further evidence that Netflix is prepared to spend major money to seize more and more dominance in the feature film market, with or without Warner Bros Discovery.
‘Best film ever’
The movie’s reviews were some of the best received by a film over the last year. The critics’ consensus on Rotten Tomatoes states that the film is ‘a worthy mystery with its genuinely soulful fixation on faith’ that ‘comes together splendidly.’
A Reddit thread dedicated to the movie talks about how it ‘continues to reinvent the modern whodunit.’
One redditor enthused: “Extremely well written and well acted by entire cast with the kind of script nuances fresh for our time yet harkening back to the golden-age best of writing and character arcs for the actors. Humor organically done well punctuates the serious subject matter for a good viewing experience.”
“Saw it in theaters a week ago and was not expecting how freaking good it was. Loved it,” commented another user, with someone else simply replying, ‘we loved it!’
One Rotten Tomatoes reviewer even went so far as to herald the film as ‘the best ever’ while another said: “A complete delight. Worthwhile to be viewed in a theater, being able to absorb the reactions of others.”
A further review on RT celebrated the film as: “A very fun ride. Great acting and kept us guessing the whole time!”
Elsewhere on a separate Reddit thread, one user exclaimed that Netflix ‘could make 100 more of these movies and I genuinely don’t think I’d ever get tired of them.’
Meanwhile, another five-star review raved: “Phenomenal, as always. One of the best written movies ever, by far. The tightest script, every nuance is pure perfection.”
What is the film about?
The murder mystery revolves around the investigation into the death of a divisive Catholic priest against the backdrop of a missing inheritance.
The priest in question is an elderly man of the cloth, serving at a small town parish, Our Lady of Perpetual Fortitude, in upstate New York.
While there, the priest is joined by a younger Catholic priest, who has been reassigned for punching a rude deacon. The younger priest is a former boxer who turned to the church after accidentally killing an opponent during one of his bouts.
The generational differences between the two fathers cause a significant rift, with the elderly priest carrying a large amount of influence over his congregation.
However, things quickly unravel after the elderly priest dies during a service, with no known assailant in sight. What’s more, the sizable inheritance from his father is also missing.
As the plot begins to twist and turn between investigations into the murder and the missing inheritance, every character becomes a suspect, and not everything, it appears, is as it seems.
Who stars in the film?
The film is made up of a stellar, all-star cast including Daniel Craig, Josh Brolin, Glenn Close, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Jeffrey Wright, Andrew Scott, Kerry Washington, and Josh O’Connor.

Brolin and O’Connor play the elderly priest and the younger priest, respectively.
Craig plays the charismatic, deep south detective Benoit Blanc, sent to investigate the murder. Close plays Brolin’s live-in mother, who also harbours hopes of inheriting her late husband’s wealth before her son does.
Directed and created by Rian Johnson, the film is the third in a series that has quickly become one of the most popular and successful in modern cinema history.
Both Johnson and Daniel Craig have expressed a desire to continue making more of the movies as long as they are both involved, per Esquire.
The film in question is the latest instalment in the Knives Out universe, entitled Wake Up Dead Man. The 2025 smash hit follows on from the original film in 2019 and its sequel, Glass Onion, in 2022.
Knives Out has become a series synonymous with mind-bending twists, especially as it pertains to the endings of each film, when Craig’s ingenious detective Blanc somehow, against all odds, solves the murder.
As Olivia Rutigliano says in her glowing review of the film for Crime Reads, Wake Up Dead Man is: “A dialectic omnibus of ideas about many things: the mystery genre, contemporary politics, the role of social media in culture, the place of religion in our lives, contradictions in the practice of Catholicism, hypocrisy, misogyny, demagoguery, greed, faith, anger, and redemption. It’s also a bona fide locked-room mystery.”
