Daniel Radcliffe has issued a warning to the child stars in the new Harry Potter series.
It’s one of the most anticipated television events in years. HBO’s long-awaited reboot of the Harry Potter franchise is finally taking shape, with a Christmas Day premiere locked in and a brand new cast of young stars stepping into the most iconic roles in modern pop culture.
For millions of fans around the world, the excitement is almost too much to bear. But for the man who originally wore the lightning bolt scar, the arrival of the new series comes with a heartfelt plea — and a serious warning.
Daniel Radcliffe rose to global superstardom at just 11 years old when he was cast as the titular wizard in the original Warner Bros. film series, a role that defined his childhood and shaped his entire life.
Now, more than two decades later, he’s watching a new generation of young actors prepare to go through something remarkably similar — and he has a lot to say about it.
A new era for Hogwarts
HBO’s ambitious adaptation is already one of the biggest projects in television. The network has committed to a full seven-season run, with each of J.K. Rowling’s beloved novels getting its own dedicated series.
Season 1, covering Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, is set to premiere on December 25, with filming already well underway.
Stepping into the shoes of the original trio are three young newcomers: Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.
Surrounding them is a stellar ensemble of established British talent, including John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Hagrid.
The scale of the production is staggering. HBO content chief Casey Bloys has already acknowledged that, like other major world-building shows such as House of the Dragon and The Last of Us, annual seasons simply won’t be possible. Current expectations suggest Season 2 may not arrive until 2028 — meaning these children could be committed to this project for well over a decade.
The weight of the wizarding world
That’s a long time for anyone to carry such enormous expectations. And nobody understands that pressure better than Radcliffe himself.
The actor has been candid in recent interviews about the complex realities of growing up as one of the most recognizable faces on the planet.
Speaking to WSJ Magazine, he reflected honestly on his own experience, noting that while his Harry Potter journey ultimately worked out, it wasn’t simply a matter of good luck.
“Yes, it can be fine,” he said of early fame, “but we all worked really hard on ourselves to make it fine.”
Radcliffe credited several factors for helping him navigate the experience relatively unscathed.
The core Harry Potter crew remained largely the same throughout the decade of filming, creating what he described as a protective and stable environment.
His parents also played a key role, helping him maintain perspective about both the opportunity and the ‘weird’ aspects of celebrity.
But stability wasn’t the only thing that got him through. Radcliffe has also spoken about leaning heavily on the crew rather than the famous adult cast around him.
“Everyone has an image of how we were all raised on the set by the best British actors,” he said, “but Maggie Smith wasn’t coming in and giving me advice on how to grow up. That’s not their job. The people that we were really close to were the crew. The crew were some of my best friends — they are still the people who I am really close to.”

A parent’s perspective
Now a father himself, Radcliffe’s feelings about childhood fame have taken on a new dimension.
He shares a two-year-old son with partner Erin Darke, and when asked whether he’d want his boy to follow in his footsteps, his answer was immediate and clear.
“I honestly wouldn’t want my son to act or to become famous,” he said plainly per the Standard, explaining that what had ultimately sustained him through his own career was a genuine love of the craft — of being on set, of the work itself — rather than any appetite for celebrity.
The comment lands with particular weight given that Radcliffe is frequently cited, alongside Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, as a success story of child stardom.
He pushes back on that framing gently but firmly. Yes, all three have built meaningful adult careers. But that outcome wasn’t accidental or inevitable — it required real, sustained effort.
Calls for mandatory therapy
Perhaps Radcliffe’s most striking intervention came when he addressed the mental health challenges facing young actors specifically.
Speaking on Bustle’s One Nightstand podcast, he called for systemic change — not just well-wishing and good intentions, but formal, structured support.
“Some mandated therapy would be a great thing,” he said directly. “I would say start therapy before you need it, and then you have a language to speak about things.”
He acknowledged that when he was growing up, that kind of support simply wasn’t available or culturally normalized. “When we were kids, we didn’t have those resources. It was the 2000s in England, so no one was thinking that way.”
Radcliffe was moved to speak out in part after hearing the story of a child actor who took his own life after struggling with his mental health — a sobering reminder that the pressures of early fame can have devastating consequences.
“You are viewed as having it all, so you feel like you kind of don’t have a right to complain,” he said. “And that is hard to get past.”
He was quick to acknowledge that his own experience on set was largely positive — ‘we had so many good people on set that were looking out for us’ — but stressed that this was down to fortunate circumstance rather than any formal system of protection. “That was more luck than anything.”

His warning to the new stars — and everyone around them
As the new series gears up, Radcliffe has made his wishes for the incoming cast crystal clear.
He wrote a personal letter to Dominic McLaughlin after the young actor was cast, wishing him well and expressing a genuine hope that his experience would be even better than his own. McLaughlin reportedly described receiving the note as ‘insane.’
Rupert Grint did the same for Alastair Stout, describing the gesture as ‘passing the baton.’
But Radcliffe’s most pointed message has been directed not at the children themselves, but at the fans, the press, and the broader culture surrounding the franchise.
He has urged everyone to resist the urge to constantly compare the new cast to the original — arguing that doing so places an unfair and unnecessary burden on young shoulders.
“If you really mean that you want to look after these kids,” he told ScreenRant, “then one of the things you can do is don’t ask about us — me, Emma and Rupert — all the time.”
He put it simply: “I would like not to be weird spectral phantoms in these children’s lives. Just let them get on with it. It’s going to be a new thing, a different thing — and I’m sure Dominic is going to be better than me.”
