The documentary gripping the internet
The true crime documentary follows one of the most harrowing missing person cases in America, blending archival footage and never-before-seen material.
The viewers are praising the film’s finale and the inspiring message behind it.
“It features a mix of real footage, reenactments, and interviews with the actual people involved,” one user writes. “It delivers everything you want from a good documentary.”
The Netflix drama, directed by Benedict Sanderson, premiered on Netflix on January 21.
The horrifying story behind the movie
It tells the story of Elizabeth Smart, who was abducted from her bedroom in Salt Lake City, Utah, by a street preacher.
When Elizabeth disappeared on June 5, 2002, she was only 14 years old.
Brian David Mitchell, who was hired by Elizabeth’s family for odd jobs, kidnapped Elizabeth and sexually assaulted her for months, with the complicity of his wife, Wanda Barzee.
Taking the viewers inside the real story, the documentary recounts the horrific kidnapping and the long captivity that followed.
The abductor, Brian David Mitchell, already had a history of drug and alcohol abuse, as well as a criminal record for indecent exposure to a child and alleged sexual abuse of his own three-year-old son.
After two divorces, Mitchell married Wanda Barzee, a then-40-year-old divorcée with six children.
Barzee also had a somewhat troubled relationship with her children — one of her daughters called her a ‘monster’, claiming that Barzee had fed her pet rabbit to her once.

Mitchell broke into Elizabeth’s house late at night and abducted her from the bedroom she shared with her sister, Mary Katherine.
Hearing the commotion, Mary Katherine woke up but pretended to be asleep.
Once she was sure the kidnapper had left, Mary Katherine ran to wake up her parents and tell them what had happened.
But Ed and Lois Smart didn’t believe her at first.
They thought she had been dreaming and dismissed her quickly, until they found that a window screen had been cut with a knife.
Ed and Lois went on television the following day, begging the abductor to return their daughter and igniting a massive regional search effort.
Only in October 2002 did Mary Katherine realize that the kidnapper’s voice sounded like that of an unemployed man the family had hired to work on the roof.
Police were skeptical until, after nine months of torture, Elizabeth was finally discovered by passersby and rescued approximately 18 miles from her home.
Mitchell was convicted of kidnapping and sexual assault, receiving two life sentences in federal prison in May 2011, while Barzee pleaded guilty to assisting in the kidnapping and received a 15-year sentence in November 2009.
Elizabeth has rebuilt her life from scratch and is now an advocate for missing persons and sexual assault victims.

The film everyone is talking about
She hopes that Kidnapped: Elizabeth Smart can bring comfort ‘that there are happy endings.’
‘They did justice to my story,’ she told Netflix, adding: “I hope that people who watch this [documentary can see] that even after terrible things happen, you can still have a wonderful life.”
Viewers particularly appreciated this positive outlook on the story, with one of them commenting that ‘it shows where everyone is now, which made for a very satisfying ending’.
“The things Elizabeth had to go through were horrific, yet her strength is amazing to see,” another one adds.
The documentary is receiving praise for its accurate, intriguing storytelling and for the inspiring message it conveys.
One viewer writes: “Elizabeth is an incredibly strong woman now, with more than just the trauma that happened to her. Incredible.”
The new documentary climbed Netflix ratings, reaching the No.2 most-viewed movie on Netflix only a couple of days after release.
And with 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and such positive reviews, the film has already made history.
